Peter Hain Fraud
Peter Hain, complete name Peter Gerald Hain, is a British politician that served different roles under the cabinets of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
His roles included being the Leader of the House of Commons, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and the Secretary of State for Wales .
The name Peter Hain is directly related to what is called as the Peter Hain fraud. The Peter Hain fraud is termed as such because of the fraudulent activity regarding election donations for Peter Hain's campaign finances.
The first sign of the Peter Hain fraud was when Mr. Hain admitted that he failed to declare the £5,000 that was donated by Labor fundraiser Jon Mendelsohn. Done in November of last year, this was thought to be a minor lapse and nothing serious. However, since then, more and more donations continued to be under declared.
An example of an under declared donation was the cost of the fundraising dinner that was organized in the Park House Club in Cardiff, sponsored by Mr. Huw Roberts, Director of Welsh Affairs for the Royal Mail, which amounted to £1,300.
What is seen in the record books is that the dinner costs only £1,000, and the public started questioning where the rest of the £300 went.
After several weeks, early on January this year, seventeen more undeclared donations were discovered amounting to more than £103,000.
Six of these donations were discreetly channeled through the Progressive Policies Forum and were then transferred to Mr. Hain's campaign funds.
Mr. Hain ended up resigning two weeks past the day that his undeclared donations were discovered as the Electoral Commission passed on the case to the Metropolitan Police.
